Blessing #4: Teaching Us Gratitude

Today's Bible Reading

  • Psalm 103:1-5

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Devotional and Prayer

“I have ZERO clue how your wife handles [my son] five days a week!”

That was an actual text a church member sent to me today. My bride teaches 28 little ones at our church’s preschool for all nine months of the school year. This mom, however, after only nine days with her few kids, was struggling to keep her sanity. She’s far from the only one!

I’ve noticed a lot of gratitude over the past few days. Gratitude for the teachers who miraculously get dozens of students’ attention at the same time. Gratitude for doctors and nurses and techs who spend their shifts working with the sick, putting their own health at risk. Gratitude for the grocery store employees working extra hours to make sure the shelves are stocked with fresh vegetables and two-ply toilet paper.

Perhaps Corona is opening our eyes to see the sacrifices that went unnoticed in years passed. King David sang, “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits - ... .” (Psalm 103:2) David didn’t want his soul to forget all the benefits and blessings that the Lord was pouring into his life. Our Father doesn’t want us to forget either.

So let’s look around today and see their sacrifice. Let’s replace our critical natures with constant gratitude for those who serve us day after day. The comment section has turned many of us into faultfinders. Maybe corona is turning us into praise-givers.

If that’s true, it will be proof that Christ > Corona.
