  • Acts 16:25-26

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.

  • Isaiah 55:8-9

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Potentially the most powerful example of the sheer influence that our praise can have – Paul and Silas are at their worst and yet they still find God’s praise on their lips. All of the sudden, God hears their prayers and the prison is shaken by an earthquake. Some of us may need a similar shake-up in our lives and this story is here to encourage us. This is how to praise in the midst of hard times – dig your heels in and look to heaven. Praise isn't just meant for the times in our lives when everything is going well. It may be even MORE powerful when nothing seems to be working out and you're at the end of your rope.
